Some shingles are marketed as 50-year or lifetime shingles, and we think that’s misleading, because it usually refers only to the defect warranty. In reality a high-quality architectural shingle typically lasts 25 to 30 years with proper care and maintenance. Synthetic and metal roofs can last 50 years or more.
What usually limits a roof isn’t the shingles at all, but the support materials (the nails, boots, flashing and underlayment) and the quality of the installation. Even the best shingles fail early if they aren’t installed properly.
